This nun is a diligent taskmaster who firmly believes that subjects such as art and dance class are a waste of time. (She doesnt think much of history either.) She contends that good teachers are cold and cunning, creating a bit of fear within the hearts of the students. In some ways, Sister Aloysius might fit the stereotype of the angry Catholic school nun who slaps the hands of students with a ruler. However, playwright John Patrick Shanley reveals his true motives in the plays dedication: This play is dedicated to the many orders of Catholic nuns who have devoted their lives to serving others in hospitals, schools, and retirement homes. Though they have been much maligned and ridiculed, who among us has been so generous? In the spirit of the above statement, Sister Aloysius seems so harsh because she ultimately cares about the well-being of the children in her school. She is ever vigilant, as apparent in her discussion with the innocent teacher Sister James; Aloysius seems to know more about the students than the young, naive nun. Eight years before the beginning of the story, Sister Aloysius was responsible for detecting a sexual predator among the priesthood. After she went directly to the monsignor, the abusive priest was removed. (She does not indicate that the priest was arrested.) Now, Sister Aloysius suspects that Father Flynn has made a sexual advance on a 12-year-old boy. She believes that while having a private conversation, Father Flynn gave the boy wine. She doesnt state exactly what she thinks happens next, but the implication is that Father Flynn is a pedophile who must be dealt with immediately. Unfortunately, because she is a woman, she does not have the same level of authority as the priests; so instead of reporting the situation to her superiors (who will probably not listen to her), she reports her suspicions to the boys mother. During the plays finale, Aloysius and Flynn confront one another. She lies, claiming that she has heard about previous incidents from other nuns. In response to her lie/threat, Flynn resigns from the school but obtains a promotion becoming the pastor of a different institution. The Dubious Priest of Doubt The audience learns much about Father Brendan Flynn, yet most of the information is hearsay and conjecture. The early scenes which feature Flynn show him in performance mode. First, he is speaking to his congregation about dealing with a crisis of faith. His second appearance, another monologue, is delivered to the boys on the basketball team he coaches. He gives them instruction about developing a routine on the court and lectures them about their dirty fingernails. Unlike Sister Aloysius, Flynn is moderate in his beliefs about discipline and tradition. For example, Aloysius scorns the idea of secular Christmas songs such as Frosty the Snowman appearing in the churchs pageant; she argues they are about magic and therefore evil. Father Flynn, on the other hand, likes the notion of the church embracing the modern culture so that its leading members can be seen as friends and family, and not just emissaries from Rome. When he is confronted about Donald Muller and the alcohol that was on the boys breath, Father Flynn reluctantly explains that the boy was caught drinking the altar wine. Flynn promised not to punish the boy if no one else found out about the incident and if he promised not to do it again. That answer relieves the naive Sister James, but it does not satisfy Sister Aloysius. During the plays finale, when Sister Aloysius falsely tells him that nuns from other parishes have made incriminating statements, Flynn becomes very emotional. FLYNN: Am I not flesh and blood like you? Or are we just ideas and convictions. I cant say everything. Do you understand? There are things I cant say. Even if you imagine the explanation, Sister, remember there are circumstances beyond your knowledge. Even if you feel certainty, it is an emotion and not a fact. In the spirit of charity, I appeal to you. Some of these phrases, such as There are things I cant say, seem to imply a level of shame and possibly guilt. However, Father Flynn firmly claims, I have not done anything wrong. Ultimately, it is up to the audience to determine guilt or innocence, or whether or not such rulings are even possible, given the sketchy bits of evidence delivered by Shanleys drama. Did Father Flynn Do It? Is Father Flynn a child molester? The audience and readers never know. At its heart, that is the point of John Patrick Shanleys Doubt—the realization that all of our beliefs and convictions are part of a facade we build to protect ourselves. We often choose to believe in things: a persons innocence, a persons guilt, the sanctity of the church, the collective morality of society. However, the playwright argues in his preface, deep down, under the chatter we have come to a place where we know that we dont know...anything. But nobodys willing to say that. One thing seems certain by the end of the play: Father Flynn is concealing something. But who isnt?

Johnny Lee Plato versus Nietzsche The central ideas that two great philosophers, Plato and Friedrich Nietzsche, talked about were the reality and appearance; and what they mainly focused on is where we as humans stand between these two. Of course, regarding the fact that Plato and Nietzsche lived in different time periods, they had their differences that conflict with each other’s theories. But they do have something to agree upon; they both argue that humans live in an illusory world of our own that we think is reality when we actually are not. These twenty men could be perceived as twenty men crossing twenty bridges for each man could experience crossing the bridge very differently. It can also be seen as one man crossing the bridge if they all had the same purpose of why they are crossing the bridge. Ultimately, these men will look like one single man. Stevens could not find the true meaning of his own behind these other people’s descriptions of the twenty men. He starts using words like â€Å"white wall† and â€Å"fruit-trees† to grasp the real meaning of these men crossing the bridge but no matter how hard he tries â€Å"the meaning escapes†(Stevens). This poem perfectly supports Nietzsche’s theory in the sense that, words are only metaphors to describe objects. Words cannot hold concepts for objects do not have real meanings behind them. I say that the fast food industry makes their food addictive making you want to come back for more. In the articleâ€Å"7 things McDonald’s knows about your brain† your brain craves foods high in sugars, salts and fats. When your body eats foods with those ingredients, your brain releases dopamine2 which is the same pleasure chemical in drug use. This is the start of food addiction. The same thing happens when you upsize the meal when you order. Your brain makes you feel good that you are getting more for your dollar but you are actually making the industry draw you in more. The brain likes branding and making predictions based on how you experience certain situations. Your reward system will kick on when it knows something good is about to happen such as receiving your meal. This will trigger the dopamine to be released as if saying thank you and causing you to want to keep coming back. Your brain can tell the difference between foods that are healthy and foods high in calories because of the salts, sugars, and fats your brain craves. James Clear’s article â€Å"What happens to your brain when you eat junk food (and why we crave it)† states the scientific reasons on how the brain craves the food. Clear begins by discussing the two factors on why we crave junk food. The first factor is how are are senses feel about the food. This makes an image in the brain on how we will think about the food next time we eat it again. The second factor is the blending of ingredients of proteins , fats, carbohydrates, salts, and sugars. The more of these blended together, the bigger craving your brain will have. Clear later on discussed the 5 scientific factors behind the cravings. The first one stated was dynamic contrast. Dynamic contrast is when you eat a food, how your senses combine while eating. This can cause you to like the food or make you never want to eat it again. The second factor was salivary response. With salivary response, the more salivation you have while chewing up the food, the more ability the food has covering your taste buds. This is why most fast food industries make their food where it causes you to take longer to chew. The next scientific factor is rapid food meltdown, also known as vanishing calorie density. This factor tricks the brain to think that you’re eating less than what you actually did. Your body will then never have that full feeling which will then make you overeat and you won’t realize it. Another factor discussed was sensory specific response meaning your brain likes different tastes. The food you eat has to have different amount of tastes in it or your brain will stop releasing dopamine 2. This is why we can eat whole packages of food in one sitting. The last scientific factor Clear stated were memories on past experiences saying that your brain creates memories with food. If you have a good memory from a time you were eating that food then your body will make you crave to eat that same food again. The food industry understands the science behind their food and this is why they are always on the move to create their next big thing. The book â€Å"Salt Sugar Fat† by Michael Moss talks about the realizations of the industry. He proves his point that â€Å"It’s not like there’s a smoking gun. The gun is right there. It is not hidden. † This meaning everyone already knows the dangers of the industry but yet act like they were blind sighted from the start. Moss stated how the industry markets toward â€Å"heavy users† meaning repeating customers who can’t get enough. The industry will use their money towards marketing these users instead of neew ones because they have found this to be more effective. An interesting fact from the book would be how the fast food industry has an 80% rule. This means that they food that they are advertising has to be eighty percent familiar to the customer or the customer could question what they were buying. Moss tells his readers that we have 10,000 taste buds and we can taste the sugar all the way down to our pancreas. Moss quotes in the book that he met a name man Jean Mayor who provided interesting information† His name was Jean Mayer, a Harvard professor of nutrition was hugely influential in matters of diet, starting with poverty and hunger which led to the introduction of food stamps and expanded school lunch programs endeared him to the food industry But what made Mayer an industry threat was his pioneering research on obesity, which he called a disease of civilization. He is credited with discovering how the desire to eat is controlled by the amount of glucose in the blood and by the brains hypothalamus, both of which in turn are greatly influenced by sugar. (p. 74). This shows how addictive sugar can really be. The next section in the book was fat. As I spoke with scientists about the way fat behaves, I couldnt resist drawing an analogy to the realm of narcotics. If sugar is the methamphetamine of processed food ingredients, with its high-speed, blunt assault on our brains, then fat is the opiate, a smooth operator whose effects are less obvious but no less powerful. (p. 148). Fat is a powerful factor on the strong rise of food addiction. In a keybut commonly overlookedaspect of obesity, weight gain can be caused by the slightest increases in consumption, if it continues day in and day out†¦ When they couldnt see the fat in their foods, they ate nearly 10 percent more or about 100 extra calories. (p. 181). This falls back to the scientific factors on why we crave food, we will continue to eat til we accomplish our reward system. The final section in the book was salt. Moss views the use of salt to improve food acceptability as another instance of unscrupulous practices by the food industry. Moss quotes â€Å"Salt was not the only culprit that was identified as contributing to high blood pressure (obesity, smoking, and diabetes were all found to be connected to the condition as well). Nevertheless, salt did receive its fair share of attention—especially when doctors found that ‘Americans were eating so much salt they were getting ten times—even twenty times—the amount of sodium the body needed. ’ † This book shows you the realistic view on what sugar,salt and fat really due to the body. What can we do about the problem from here? Both sides of this issue agree that there is a health problem. You can simply stay away from the industry. The brain will crave the food less the more you stay away from them. The individual needs to break their own cycle and teach their mind when enough is enough. If the individual feels that they can’t beat this problem on their own, many rehab facilities treat food addiction. The person will have many psychiatrists and nutritionists helping them during treatment. The person will begin to understand how their brain was making them crave the foods and how they will begin to step away from the industry. You will have full support along the way and with time, you will be able to stay away from the taunting of the fast food industry. In conclusion, many argue that it is time to be responsible for the choices you make when it comes to the food you eat. Others, as well as myself, argue that the industry is indeed at fault. Your brain craves the many ingrediants the industry puts in their food. Psychological your body makes you go to the fast food restraunt. Now it is your turn to know when it is time to put down the burger and stand up to the industry to let them know you’ve had enough of the mind control.

The United States has been the largest donor, but it has frequently interrupted the flow of aid because of alleged human rights abuses, corruption, and election fraud.The prospects for development improved for a while when Jean-Claude Duvalier left in 1986. It was then that the economy began to grow February 1986 departure; some important economic reforms took place, and the economy began to grow but this was later stalled. The economy could have continued to grow but political and social problems prevented this.In June 1997 the Prime Minister Rosny Smarth resigned leaving a 10 month gap where the Parliament was reluctant to accept any recommendations for a new prime minister put forward. This meant a long period of time passed when there was no legislative government. In January 1999 a new prime minister was appointed, Jacques-Edouard Alexis who decided to hold elections to reconstruct Parliament.In 2005 the H aitian National Police (HNP) were accused of unlawfully abusing/murdering citizens acting outside their authority. However lack of interest from the Haitian government meant that investigations were unsuccessful in trying to find who was at fault. This was further made difficult by people acting as HNP so it was hard to determine if it was actually a member of the HNP.Due to the lack of courses within the police department when citizens were arrested for crimes they were later released due to the countries corrupt and inefficient judicial system. For example a HNP officer killed a man who was arguing with him at the police station. This officer was arrested but no other information was available and so he was released.Despite recent developments within the country corruption is still occurring within Haiti.With reports in lack of help for societal and violence against women, internal trafficking of children, child abuse, child labour, gang murders, torture, kidnapping and severe cor ruption within the government itself, Haiti still remains dependent from the help from other countries.Health SystemHaitis health system includes the public sector, the semi-public sector, and the private sector.The public sector was seriously affected by the countrys political crisis, which led all foreign aid to be channeled through nongovernmental organizations (NGOs). The Ministry of Health is structured into central, departmental, and community levels. Through its central directorates and units, it sets standards. Planning, monitoring, and supervision are the responsibility of the heads of the nine sanitary departments. One-third of the countrys 663 health institutions belong to the public sector.The semi-public or mixed sector encompasses nonprofit institutions that are supported mainly by NGOs. Staff is paid in whole or in part by the public sector, but is managed by the private sector.In 1994 there were 49 hospitals and 61 other inpatient facilities, with an estimated 90 bed s per 100,000 population. Of the countrys total health care facilities, 32% are operated by NGOs. The private, profit-making sector is comprised of physicians, dentists, and other private practice specialists who mostly work in Port-au-Prince and in private health care facilities. Public and private establishments function completely independent of one another with very little networking. Differences in access to adequate health care are further magnified by the uneven geographical distribution of centers and hospital beds.Social security benefits are limited to formally employed people. In 1995, the Insurance Agency for Occupational Accidents, Illness, and Maternity (OFATMA), an autonomous body under the umbrella of the Ministry of Social Affairs, provided insurance coverage to 2,500 public and private firms. The Ministries of Public Health and of Education, with external financial and technical assistance, are working together to develop school health policies appropriate for Haiti, including early detection of hearing and vision problems; promotion of oral health and detection of dental caries; nutritional surveillance; detection of iron deficiency and diseases caused by intestinal parasites; early detection of poor posture; health education and promotion, including sex education; and the prevention of STDs.Workers Health. Haiti has no national hea lth program for workers, but workers who receive coverage from the Agency for Occupational Accidents, Illness, and Maternity were given annual examinations to detect tuberculosis and syphilis. The Agency has a 30-bed hospital in Port-au-Prince that granted appointments to an average of 30 outpatients a day.The main health problems of children are prematurity, pneumonia, malnutrition, meningitis, typhoid, and gastroenteritis. Teenagers are particularly vulnerable to tuberculosis, anemia, skin diseases, and sexually transmitted diseases. For people aged 10-19 HIV/AIDS was the leading cause of death! This can be accomplished by increasing availability and access to youth-friendly reproductive health services and introducing educational materials to improve knowledge of the youth and adults. Haiti can also establish HIV/AIDS speciality care centres which will provide counselling and testing, prevention methods and other services.Also there must be easier access to see a doctor, maybe locate them at schools and work places.LabourHaitis Labour Code (Article 335) states that the minimum employment age in all sectors is 15 years, except in the case of children working in domestic service. The Labour Code (Article 341) sets the minimum employment age for domestic work at 12 years of age. All working children between the ages of 15 and 18 must be registered with the Ministry of Social Affairs. The Labour Code prohibits minors from working under dangerous conditions and prohibits children under the age of 18 from working at night in industrial enterprises. Penalties for child l abour violations are 1,000 to 3,000 gourdes (US$42 to US$126). The Labour Code prohibits forced or compulsory labour, including forced or compulsory labour by minors. Laws do not prohibit trafficking in persons. The Ministry of Social Affairs Institute of Welfare and Research (IBESR) has the authority and the mandate to protect children. The IBESR has approximately 12 social service workers working throughout the Port-au-Prince Metropolitan area.According to a report published by the US government more than more than 300.000 children a year are being taken out from Haiti and forced to work as beggars, farmers and construction workers by adults who keep their wages. Each year, more than half end up in Dominican Republic. The parents often help their children to work outside the country seeing in this a way of obtaining some additional income. The study shows that the problem is mostly in northern Haiti. While about half of the children go to the Dominican Republic for three of four m onths and then return in Haiti to attend school, many of them end up staying there as a low-wage farm workers.In terms of housing and food, they live in very poor condition and often they are physically and verbally abused, but because of their illegal status and their age, they fear going to the authorities and risk to be send back home.UNICEF official, Alec Fyfe, said that while labourers have been migrating from Haiti for decades, the worrying new twist is the trafficking in children. The families see the middlemen doing the smuggling almost as benefactors due to the extreme poverty in Haiti.UNICEF officials said that parents pay the smugglers $60 to $80 per child to take their children to the Dominican Republic. The smugglers in turn pay Dominican border guards $1 to $3 per child to sneak them across the border.The U.N. states that many children are physically, emotionally, and sexually abused. And few are given the chance to attend school. Beyond Borders, a non-political volunt eer organization which advances the rights of children to be free from abuse and exploitation without regard to race, religion, gender or sexual orientation is supporting a growing movement in Haiti to bring an end to child servitude and exploitation.Billboards like this are a small part of campaign to end child servitude. The billboard says, Give me your hand. Give me tomorrow. Down with Child Servitude. The campaign Down with Child Servitude initiated by Beyond Borders organisation that is established in Haiti has developed an extensive public awareness campaign to change attitudes about the practice of exploiting children in domestic servitude, appealing to guardians of these children and government officials to use their power to protect them.In 1998, the International Labour Organization (ILO) estimated that 24 percent of children between the ages of 10 and 14 in Haiti were working. Child labour in Haiti is generally non-existent in the industrial and commercial agriculture sec tors because of high adult unemployment.A 1997 UNICEF study estimated that there were some 250,000 to 300,000 child domestic workers in Haiti, 80 percent of whom were girls under the age of 14. In Haiti, child domestic workers are commonly referred to as restaveks, a Creole word meaning to stay with. They are among the most vulnerable and exploited of all children in Haiti. Isolated from family and peers, restavek children are largely unprotected from abuse. According to UNICEF, most restaveks reach the age of 15 without ever having been to school. Most restaveks work 10 to 14 hours per day and do not receive any compensation for their work. They are often psychologically and physically punished by the master or mistress of the house and sometimes even by their children. Girl restaveks are sometimes sexually abused by the males in the employing families. If a girl becomes pregnant, she will generally be released into the streets. Many such girls become street children or prostitutes .In the neighbouring Dominican Republic, between 10,000 to 14,000 Haitian workers are contracted annually to work in the sugarcane industry where Haitian children are found working, particularly in the Barahona province. What needs to be done here is firstly to make sure that the education is accessible for every child in Haiti so they wont have to go abroad and work for a few months and save money so they can go to school when they return.EducationIn Haiti, the traditional education system, based on the French system, begins with six years of primary education followed by seven years of secondary education. Two streams end either in the Baccalaureat I after three years or the Baccalaureat II after four years. In the reform system, the primary cycle lasts for nine years followed by three years of secondary education. Pupils opt for classical, technical, or a professional stream.Higher education is provided by universities and other public and private institutions and is under the re sponsibility of the Ministry of Education.Primary schooling supposed to be free and compulsory, but it is still big expense for families who must pay for uniforms, textbooks and other inputs (all costs are as much as 15% of family income per child). Due to weak state provision of education services, private and parochial schools account for about 90% of primary schools, and only 65% of primary school-aged children are actually enrolled. Less than 35% of those who enter will complete primary school. At the secondary level, the figure drops to around 20%. Haitians realise how important education is, but most of them just cannot afford send their children to secondary schools. 60% of rural households suffer from chronic food insecurity, and food comes before education. Another reason why numbers of students decreased is violence in the country. A nationwide assessment conducted in March 2004 showed that the political conflict in Haiti has had a severe impact on Haitis children, particu larly the most vulnerable. During the period surrounding Aristides resignation, students in eight of 19 major cities received death threats aimed at preventing them from attending school or participating in public events. A number of schools and hospitals were the targets of violence and looting, and many schools were closed for months.In the field of education, girls and boys have equal opportunities to attend primary school. At the primary school level the gross number of years of schooling for girls is 0.5-2.1 years lower than for boys. Women also enter the job market at an early age; roughly 10% of young girls aged 5-9 years and 33% of girls aged 10-14 may be considered economically active.With an adult illiteracy rate of 52% (48% of males are illiterate and 52.2% of females are illiterate), education remains a key obstacle to economic and social advancement in Haiti (source: http://www.buildingwithbooks.org)To help improve attendance at schools many organisations help to suppor t and develop education system. The World Food Programme, USAID, World Bank, Save The Children and many more trying to look after pupils health and provide 1000caloreis meals. There is also UK charity Plan International, which helps provide furniture to Haitians schools and also UNICEF, which help with quality training teachers and improve quality of Haitis school infrastructure, specifically through the renovation of school buildings and equipment.To improve childrens attendance at school, their safety is most important point. Making buildings more secure and also provide school buses taking children to school and home after classes.Also, to increase childrens attendance Haiti can introduce finance incentive programmes, which have been very successful in Jamaica, such as rewarding classes for outstanding attendance, awarding individual certificates.Children, whos families are struggling to afford food, should have meals provided, as a another reason why attend school.Also important is the quality of teaching, why not make it more attractive doing a teaching placement year in Haiti for French students? It would be a great opportunity for students to develop their skills and make their work experience more interesting for future employers.

Review of Educating Rita essays Review of Educating Rita by Willy Russel and its themes With tonight's movie, "Educating Rita", I'd kind of like to make a case for a strong sub-genre within the major film genres, and that's the school genre. I think we've got so many movies about school simply because we all have such strong memories and feelings about that time in our lives. Now, the sub-genre consists of a lot of little conventions. For example, it seems like English and Math are the subjects that most appear in this sub-genre. It seems to be the kind of subjects that students continue to be the most afraid of. We've also got the inspiring teacher convention, with movies like "Goodbye Mr. Chips" and "To Sir With Love", things like that. And we've got the unruly students. Essentially, the diamonds in the rough. They've got great potential, but they have to be moulded or shaped somehow. And we get a very large range in this sub-genre. We have light comedies like "Summer School" and serious movies like "Lean on Me". What it's all about though, is socialization and accom modation. How do these students learn to get along in the real world? In a lot of ways that's what movies are essentially about. Trying to teach us how to accommodate or socialize ourselves into the larger structures we exist in. This movie is about how the class struggle comes to the classroom. You'd think that England would be an ideal place to talk about class struggle in the school system. But, when you look at other movies in this teacher sub-genre, we see that there are ghettos in the U.S. where this class system is still in place, as much as Americans, and Canadians for that fact, might not want to admit it. What we've got is a bit of a retelling of the story of "Pygmalion", you know, "My Fair Lady", all that sort of thing. Where we have an educated man who tries to teach an uneducated woman about the finer things in life, except that in this case, we've got a very reluctant teacher in Frank ...

How to Know If Youre Really Ready for a Promotion at Work You’ve been offered a promotion at work! Congratulations. It’s an honor and a good sign you’ve been doing a lot of things just right. Upward mobility can be tricky to navigate, and you’re one step closer to the top. But before you jump at the chance to make the transition from team member to department supervisor, there are a few things to keep in mind. Managing requires a markedly different set of additional skills. You might even find yourself doing less of the work you love and more of the managing. The perks are pretty easy to spot. You’ll get paid more, for starters- when taking on additional responsibility, you’re almost always rewarded with extra compensation. Your value to the company goes up, so does your paycheck.But there are also a few drawbacks you might not anticipate:Higher risk: The stakes are higher. So are the hazards, if those apply to your line of work. Also, more of your coworkers will be out to try and get your job. Youà ¢â‚¬â„¢ll have to keep your eyes open and deliver more than you have been expected to deliver previously.More company responsibility: Managers are often congratulated when a team produces good results. But they are also often blamed when those results aren’t up to par. No matter how well you directed your team or how hard you all worked, you’ll be expected to own the end results.Leadership: There’s no escaping the fact that you will have to assume a role of leadership. Good managers have to learn to inspire people, motivate them, keep them on track, give them space to do their work- but not enough to shirk it, etc. You’ll be part educator, part mentor, part taskmaster, part disciplinarian. A big portion of your new job will be spent this way.Delegation: If you’re not good at delegating or ceding control. If you’re a slave to details or have a hard time trusting others to perform at your level, be prepared for some anxiety. But before you jump at the chance to make the transition from team member to department supervisor, there are a few things to keep in mind. Managing requires a markedly different set of additional skills. You might even find yourself doing less of the work you love and more of the managing. The perks are pretty easy to spot. You’ll get paid more, for starters- when taking on additional responsibility, you’re almost always rewarded with extra compensation. Your value to the company goes up, so does your paycheck.But there are also a few drawbacks you might not anticipate:Higher risk: The stakes are higher. So are the hazards, if those apply to your line of work. Also, more of your coworkers will be out to try and get your job. Youà ¢â‚¬â„¢ll have to keep your eyes open and deliver more than you have been expected to deliver previously.More company responsibility: Managers are often congratulated when a team produces good results.
